This weekend Seanchai and I drove to San Francisco this weekend and we had a great time. We met some old friends from Hawaii that had moved to the mainland a couple of years back. We were able to go to some of our favorite restaurants and we even made it to Divas on Saturday night.
Now that I am living in LA I am looking forward to the road trips I can take. This weekend was a warm up trip to the potential longer trips we will take now that I am here. We drove up north. We made an overnight stop in Monterey. We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Cannery Row. It is a nice hotel and if you walk in on a slow night you can get it for 20% less than the web
rate. It is a well located hotel with big rooms for the price, however it has paper thin walls so be prepared to hear most that goes on in the room next to you.
We went out for an evening and we were both in the mood for sea food and then a cigar. We found a few seafood restaurants on the web and it seemed like most bars had an outdoor smoking area. There is a great Cigar shop on Alvarado close to the Mucky Duck Bar.
The restaurant we originally wanted to go to was a brew pub it was closing as we got there at 7:45pm due to a computer failure. I guess the bar couldn’t figure out to take cash. So we went to another place recommended by trip adviser “The Fisherman’s Grotto”. It was on the pier and it had a great wine special. All wines were 50% off that was great. The menu looked like good American seafood fare set in a family restaurant on the Pier. The staff was good and helpful. I get great Seafood in Hawaii so maybe I am spoiled, however I never expect to go to a seafood restaurant next to pier and get frozen seafood. I had Abalone and it was frozen or maybe artificial, and breaded to cover the flavor. Maybe it was a seasonal thing but it was disappointing.
After dinner we walked back to the town and found a British pub with an outside area. We sat out back and had a cigar. We tend to attract caricatures and this night was no exception. In walks a 72 year old guy with his daughter. They were in Monterey for a nut farmers conference. They were great fun and we had a blast telling stories. Kelii our waiter from Maui was fun as well.
The bar made the trip fun
