Rio was cold but fun with some changes. It seems that with the winning of the FIFA World Cup in 2004 that someone in the Brazilian government has taken the image of Copacabana Beach seriously.

In the past you had to be on full alert at all times if you were alone after dark.  If I would sit at one of the beach bars and read a book I would have to look around after every page or when you heard a sound.  This trip was different.  While there were still the begging kids after dark (some are pretty aggressive), I didn’t see the thieves that I saw in the past, and I didn’t hear any gun shots.   They are lengthening the subway system and it is clean.  Luiz Damazo and I used it to go to Maracana for the Copa Carioca between Flamengo and Botofogo (Flamengo won.)

Hawai’i has the second-highest rate of online adult website subscribers in the nation, a new study says.

The study by Benjamin Edelman of Harvard Business School calculated Hawai’i’s rate at 1.37 subscribers per 1,000 residents. When looking at homes with Internet users, the rate is 2.19 subscribers per 1,000 homes.

Only Utah has higher rates in both categories, and that state topped two other categories in the study, which collected data from two years of credit-card purchases from adult entertainment Web sites.

The study also found that states that tend to be more conservative and religious are paying to watch slightly more porn than more liberal states.

However, “when it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different,” Edelman told the magazine NewScientist. The study was published in the current edition of the Journal of Economic Perspectives.

Eight of the top 10 adult material-consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year’s presidential election — Florida and Hawai’i were the exceptions. On the other hand, six out of the lowest 10 favored Barack Obama.

Churchgoers bought less online porn on Sundays — a 1 percent increase in a postal ZIP code’s religious attendance was associated with a 0.1 percent drop in subscriptions that day. But expenditures on other days of the week brought them in line with the rest of the country, Edelman found.

Residents of 27 states that passed laws banning gay marriage boasted 11 percent more porn subscribers than states that don’t explicitly restrict gay marriage.

The study also found slight differences in online adult material purchasing habits, based on education, urbanization and income.

Larry Flynt is asking for a bailout.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Another major American industry is asking for assistance as the global financial crisis continues: Hustler publisher Larry Flynt and Girls Gone Wild CEO Joe Francis said Wednesday they will request that Congress allocate $5 billion for a bailout of the adult entertainment industry.

“The take here is that everyone and their mother want to be bailed out from the banks to the big three,” said Owen Moogan, spokesman for Larry Flynt. “The porn industry has been hurt by the downturn like everyone else and they are going to ask for the $5 billion. Is it the most serious thing in the world? Is it going to make the lives of Americans better if it happens? It is not for them to determine.”

Francis said in a statement that “the US government should actively support the adult industry’s survival and growth, just as it feels the need to support any other industry cherished by the American people.”

“We should be delivering [the request] by the end of today to our congressmen and [Secretary of the Treasury Henry] Paulson asking for this $5 billion dollar bailout,” he told CNN Wednesday.

Flynt and Francis concede the industry itself is in no financial danger — DVD sales have slipped over the past year, but Web traffic has continued to grow.

But the industry leaders said the issue is a nation in need. “People are too depressed to be sexually active,” Flynt said in the statement. “This is very unhealthy as a nation. Americans can do without cars and such but they cannot do without sex.”

“With all this economic misery and people losing all that money, sex is the farthest thing from their mind. It’s time for congress to rejuvenate the sexual appetite of America. The only way they can do this is by supporting the adult industry and doing it quickly.”

So far, there has been no congressional reaction to the request.

Seanchai and I had a trip to Japan a right before Christmas.  It was a great trip, very different than other working trips I have had their in the past.  This trip I was shooting Transsexuals or “New-Half” in Japan.  The other trips I had made in the past were doing commercial work or holiday with my Japanese ex-wife.

I had been to Kansai before however, it had always been on lock down.  This trip was as a single guy!  On my first trip to Kyoto it was in 1999 and it was fantastic.  I was their shooting and it was like being a celebrity.  We ate and went some places whites were not allowed. We partied at the best clubs. We got attention every where we went.  My how things have changed in just a few years. They say Japan’s sex scene has been ruined by the ex-pats that have moved their over the last 10 years and not only raped the economy but driven a racial divide between foreigners and Japanese.   This was evident when we walked down a street I had walked down not 10 years ago in the red light area of Kyoto.  Last time I couldn’t walk a block with out being hustled or pushed toward a club entrance that had tantalizing photos of the girls that are reputed to be inside.  This time people would turn around to avoid us and only 1 place offered entrance.  This was a bit depressing because I was really looking forward to some action this time.  Even the girls on the street were down right unfriendly.

Those of you with a weak stomach might not want to read any further. I will preface this with telling you I will try almost any food. I have eaten exotic foods all over the world, like Insects in Thailand. Lambs brains in Morocco, duck tongue in Shanghai, and that is just the tip of the iceberg.

In Japan we went to a couple of restaurants that have blown me away, not only in taste but in texture as well. Last night we went to Gion in Kyoto, Japan. This is a very old area of Kyoto with some restaurants that have existed for centuries. This is also the place made famous for the Geisha. They still have restaurants that cater to the traditional entertainment for the very rich and Japanese only are allowed. We went to a place that I don’t think was very used to seeing white people however, we were told when we made the reservation that it is no problem.

The restaurant was very small. It was immaculately clean and decorated. It had a narrow bar with maybe 10 seats and a private room and a restroom.

The food was incredible. We started with Fugu (poisonous blowfish) skin, O-Toro (raw fatty tuna belly), Ika (raw squid), Hamachi (raw yellow fin tuna) it was amazing. Then we had sunfish intestines. These were purple and reminded me of poi in their consistency but the taste was salty with a hint of bitterness, this was fantastic. Then we had a series of dishes that weren’t special or unique.

The problem was the reservations were made by the concierge not by us. We had to reserve our menu in advance, and when the concierge was asked what we would like for dinner he asked us what time we wanted to eat. We said 8:00 he told the restaurant 8000 yen or about $80US. This sucked because we got the bargain plate. The people next to us were eating Abalone, Ikura, Kobe steak the works!

A couple of nights before we ate at a famous restaurant in the hotel named Kitchu. This is famous for traditional Japanese cuisine. Here we had some amazing things.

We had raw sea cucumber with radish and sea cucumber intestines in a side dish. These were divine, and they were light and earthy with a hint of sweetness.

We then had the best Ika (raw squid) I have ever had. It was a thick cut with the perforations, but I am not sure of the preparation. It wasn’t your typical Ika it was not chewy or slippery. It was musky maybe it had been soaked in Sake.

Sunfish must be in season because we had it a couple of different ways. I loved it lightly fried then shredded. They wrapped it into soy milk skimming and put it in a leek and mushroom soup.

The most exciting thing I had on this trip was a complete new sensation. It was a fish called Tara they served us the Intestine with radish and Uni (Sea Urchin). As soon as you put it in your mouth it literally dissolved on contact. It seemed if it was floating away. This dish alone was worth the trip. Now I have to find out if my favorite sushi chef can do this!

BANGKOK: — Due to rampant forgery, Bt1,000 banknotes have literally lost their shine among small-scale vendors.

“I do my best to avoid accepting Bt1,000 banknotes in payment,” says Suwut Kerdchai, a grocer in Chon Buri.

His common excuse is that he does not have enough money for change.

“I now request Bt100 banknotes or smaller denominations from my customers,” Suwut admits, “I can’t risk ruining my business. Grocery does not give much profit. If you get a fake banknote and have to give the change to the fake-banknote users too, that’s too bad.”

Recently, police reported finding fake banknotes being circulated near Suwut’s hometown and many other areas.

“I am so worried. The fake ones look so similar to the authentic banknotes,” Sopo Chaikul, a seafood-seller, laments.

She urges relevant authorities to crack down on the counterfeiting.

In Khon Kaen, the Bang Lamphu Market has found fake Bt100 and Bt1,000 banknotes on a daily basis. The market manager, Paspadorn Niampradit, now advises sellers about how to identify the fake money.

“We have urged the sellers to examine the banknotes before letting their customers take their goods away,” Paspadorn said yesterday.

Somchai Setkornnukool, a senior director at the Bank of Thailand’s Northeast Branch, explained that people would be able to distinguish fake from authentic banknotes based on proper guidelines.

“Feel the word ‘Thai Government’ [which is printed in Thai] and you will find it is embossed on the banknote if it is authentic,” Somchai said.

He added that when the banknote was held against the light, a watermark of His Majesty the King’s portrait would become clearly visible.

“Moreover, if you notice, you will see small translucent numerals and letters indicating the value of the banknotes on the metallic colour thread too,” Somchai said.

When tilted, the numerals showing the values of each Bt500 and Bt1000 banknotes also change their colour when viewed at different angles.

Somchai said people should not panic about reports that fake banknotes were in the market.

“Counterfeiting has existed since the time banknotes were first introduced,” he said. “And we have been trying to crack down on counterfeiting all along. If you have any useful information, please let us know and you will get some reward,” he said.

Printers of fake banknotes are liable to life imprisonment. Deliberately using the fake banknotes, meanwhile, is punishable by a jail term ranging from one to 15 years.

But self-protective vendors will risk being punished too if they reject a Bt1,000 banknote without verifying whether it is real or fake.

“Banknotes are legal tender for all debts, public and private. If you are not allowed to use your banknotes, you can lodge a complaint with the police,” Deputy Metropolitan Police Commissioner Maj-General Amnuay Nimmano said.

Meanwhile, Thai Bankers’ Association secretary-general Thawatchai Yongkittikhun revealed that bank customers now asked for Bt500, Bt100, and Bt20 banknotes much more than usual.

“If such trend continues, we may have a shortage in smaller denominations,” he said.

Thawatchai called on the authorities to urgently educate people about how to distinguish fake from authentic banknotes.

“People should stay calm. Any panic may upset the economy,” he said. “Although the number of fake banknotes is higher now, the increase is not at a worrying level.
